Who is the backward child?
A
backward child is one who compared with other pupils of the same age shows
marked educational deficiency. Backwardness, in general, is applied to cases
where their educational attainment falls below the level of their natural
abilities.
The IQ
of slow learners usually ranges from 70 to 90. These children are unable to
deal successfully with abstract materials; their reasoning ability is inferior
to that of the normal children and their span of attention is relatively
shorter. Hence they lag behind in their schoolwork. These are the children who
are often forced to spend more than a year in a particular class.
In
fact, intelligence is no guarantee against backwardness nor does a lower IQ
alone necessarily make a child backward. Presently, the term backwardness is
used to denote any child who does not progress at a rate corresponding to his
abilities.
