Guidance to the Parents of MR children
The first
step in the education of MR children is to make their parents realize the truth
about their children. They should be informed about the child’s limitation and the
mental deficiency and also the fact that the child cannot be given more intelligence
and made normal. The following points should be taken into consideration while
giving guidance to the parents of MR children:
1. The parents
should be educated to behave normally with their MR Child without being over
protective or rejecting him.
2. The
parents should be advised not to compare the achievements and abilities of
their subnormal child with those of their normal children or children in the
neighbourhood.
3.
Parents should also be advised to take care that the retarded child is not
unnecessarily criticized or ridiculed by others.
4.
Parents should be given training and education for handing the emotional and
social adjustment problems of the retarded child.
5.
Parents should be advised to assign appropriate domestic tasks to their MR Child
to develop and seek maximum utilization of his subnormal capacities.
6. The parents
should be made to realize that there is no harm in sending their children to
special schools meant for the mental retardants.
