Education of underachievers (Remedial Measures)
1.
Early identification and counseling: The school counselor should take steps to
identify underachievers at the early school years with assistance from teachers
and parents. Steps taken at an early stage will help to overcome the learning
difficulties more successfully compared to assistance given at a later stage. The
counseling interventions should be so planned to help them decide goals and help
reverse any habits that are blocking the road to success.
2.
Special classroom: The second category of instructional interventions focuses
on special classrooms designed to create a more favorable environment for
gifted underachievers. These classrooms have a small teacher-student ratio and use
less conventional approaches to teaching student typically have more freedom and
control of their own learning.
3.
Adjusting school activities: Flexibility of curriculum, adjusting,
instructional strategies to meet individual needs, varied learning style
options, setting goals not far from student ability, etc. will help to minimize
the incidents of underachievement. Establish the value and worth of each
learning activity in the eyes of the student.
4.
Home-school interaction: Involve the family in a close, working relationship
with the school. Parents and teachers should establish a strong parental
posture of the student.
5.
Unlearning of underachievement: Often, underachievement is a learned behavour ,
thusk it can be unlearned if the appropriate help is provided. Therefore, the
school psychologist’s role is to help identify gifted students who are underachievement.
Then, they can help teachers, parents, and children recognize the factors that
cause, support, and reward underachievement. Finally, they can help students,
their families, and teachers reverse these underachieving behaviours through
education during individual, group, and family counseling sessions.
