Backwardness, its kinds and casues

There are two types of backwardness; a) general backwardness, b) specific backwardness. The child suffering from general backwardness is found to be weak in all subjects of the school curriculum; and the child suffering from specific backwardness lags behind in one or two specific subjects only.

Causes of backwardness

                1. Physical and psychological factors: Majority of the backward children suffer from some kind of developmental retardation. Either they are born with poor health, inherited lack of vitality or physical deformities or they suffer from physical ailment, chronic diseases and bodily defects. Defective vision, faulty hearing, speech defects, left handedness etc. make them handicapped and they are necessarily develop as backward.
                2. Intellectual factors: children born with intellectual sub normality cannot keep pace with the normal class activities and prove to be slow in learning. Children with low IQ are not only affected in terms of quick understanding and grasping the meaning or remembering, but suffer also from emotional imbalance and social maladjustment which impedes progress in school subjects.
                3. Family factors: In poor families, not only the educational facilities but the most essential necessities of life are denied to the children. Due to unhygienic conditions and malnutrition the health of these poor children is adversely affected.
                4. School factors: School factors like-a) defective, uninteresting and ineffective teaching              
b) Lack of equipments, facilities and provision for revision of teachers, c) no regular checking of home assignment, d) defective curriculum and examination system, e) poor administration and indiscipline
