Kinds of backwardness
There are two types of backwardness; a) general backwardness,
b) specific backwardness. The child suffering from general backwardness is
found to be weak in all subjects of the school curriculum; and the child
suffering from specific backwardness lags behind in one or two specific
subjects only.
Causes of
backwardness
1.
Physical and psychological factors: Majority of the backward children suffer
from some kind of developmental retardation. Either they are born with poor health,
inherited lack of vitality or physical deformities or they suffer from physical
ailment, chronic diseases and bodily defects. Defective vision, faulty hearing,
speech defects, left handedness etc. make them handicapped and they are
necessarily develop as backward.
2.
Intellectual factors: children born with intellectual sub normality cannot keep
pace with the normal class activities and prove to be slow in learning. Children
with low IQ are not only affected in terms of quick understanding and grasping
the meaning or remembering, but suffer also from emotional imbalance and social
maladjustment which impedes progress in school subjects.
3.
Family factors: In poor families, not only the educational facilities but the most
essential necessities of life are denied to the children. Due to unhygienic
conditions and malnutrition the health of these poor children is adversely
affected.
4.
School factors: School factors like-a) defective, uninteresting and ineffective
teaching
b) Lack of equipments, facilities and provision for revision
of teachers, c) no regular checking of home assignment, d) defective curriculum
and examination system, e) poor administration and indiscipline
