Classification based on the Medium of
Testing
Based upon the medium of testing , intelligence tests can be
grouped into two- verbal tests and non-verbal tests.
A. Verbal Tests: A test which requires the use of verbal
ability- ability to read, write and understand words – of the subjects is
called a verbal test. Such tests make use of language as the vehicle of testing.
The test content is loaded with verbal material and the items are presented
orally or in written forms for which answers have to be given on oral or
written language. So to take such tests knowledge of the language of the test
is necessary.
Merits
1. Administration and scoring is easy and less
time consuming even in group situation.
2. They are less expensive compared to non-verbal or
performance tests.
3. Preparation and standardization of verbal tests are easier
than that of non-verbal tests
Demerits
1. Proficiency
of language may influence test-scores.
2. To take verbal tests knowledge of the language of the
test is necessary.
3.Individual with sensory handicaps and very young children
cannot be tsested
