Abilities in perceptual speed, memory, verbal meaning, numerical ability, spatial relations, synonyms, analogies, numerical reasoning, logical selection, practical judgment, number and word fluency, verbal comprehension, classification, problem solving ability, rote memory, immediate capacities for observation and clear thinking etc. are some of the common abilities measured in intelligence tests.
For example, Wechsler’s Test measure mental abilities like (a) general information (b) general comprehension (c) arithmetic reasoning (d) ability to make distinction between similarities (e)ability to reproduce an orally presented digital series (f)vocabulary, and (g)performance abilities like abilities to complete a picture, ability to arrange a picture, ability to assemble objects etc. Most of the items in Stanford - Binet test deal with vocabulary, general information, comprehension etc. So it measures the verbal ability. Most of the performance tests measures abilities like copying a design by using coloured blocks, completing a picture, copying a block structure, arranging a series of pictures into a meaningful sequence etc. The California Test of Mental Maturity and Adaptation measures visual acuity, auditory acuity and motor co-ordnation.
