ABILITIES MEASURED IN INTELLIGENCE TESTS
Abilities
in perceptual speed, memory, verbal meaning, numerical ability, spatial
relations, synonyms, analogies, numerical reasoning, logical selection, practical
judgment, number and word fluency, verbal comprehension, classification,
problem solving ability, rote memory, immediate capacities for observation and clear
thinking etc. are some of the common abilities measured in intelligence tests.
For
example, Wechsler’s Test measure mental abilities like (a) general information
(b) general comprehension (c) arithmetic reasoning (d) ability to make
distinction between similarities (e)ability to reproduce an orally presented
digital series (f)vocabulary, and (g)performance abilities like abilities to
complete a picture, ability to arrange a picture, ability to assemble objects
etc. Most of the items in Stanford - Binet test deal with vocabulary,
general information, comprehension etc. So it measures the verbal ability. Most
of the performance tests measures abilities like copying a design by using
coloured blocks, completing a picture, copying a block structure, arranging a
series of pictures into a meaningful sequence etc. The California Test of
Mental Maturity and Adaptation measures visual acuity, auditory acuity and
motor co-ordnation.
