Causes of Depression in Teens
Combination of biological and
social factors leads to depression Biological factors such as heredity, body’s
hormonal response to stress, normal process of maturing and the stress that occurs
with it, influence of sex hormones, long term illness. Among social factors,
there are interpersonal conflict with parents, sibling, friends, and teachers,
death of a friend or relative, a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend etc.
Over burden of curriculum,
frequent examination and tests, failure at schools, interpersonal conflict in
schools, monotonous school life, learning disability etc. are some school
related factors causing depression in teens. Psychological factors such as low
self-esteem, low self-efficacy, internal locus of control, low emotional
intelligence, gender specific coping styles etc. contributes to depression. The
following events or situations can also cause depression: (a) bullying or
harassment at school, (b) child abuse both physical and sexual,(c) lack of
social skills, (d) long-term illness,(e) poor parenting , (f) stressful life
events, such as the loss of a parent to death or divorce
