Adolescent suicide

Image result for suicideSuicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents in world after epidemics and motor accidents. It is a growing national problem, having tripled over the past 20 years, perhaps because teenagers face more stresses and have fewer supports than they did in the past decades. Suicide rates are lower in societies where teenagers get higher levels of support through extended families and social affiliation. In contrast, when stress is overwhelming and social support lacking, the suicide rate rises. Striking sex difference in suicide behavior exists. Though the number of suicide attempt among girls is higher than that among boys, the number of boys who kill themselves is four times higher than the number of girls. This is because boys adopt more active methods of suicide, and the rate of unsuccessful suicide attempt among girls is higher.
