The Department of Posts has been the backbone of India's communication network ,and has played a key role in the country's development for the last 150 years.
Today ,the Indian postal network is the largest network in the world in terms of area covered ,and population served.When India became independent, the country had 23,24 post offices, most of which were in urban areas.
There are 1,54,866 post offices as of 2011, of which 1,39,040 are in the rural areas .
Mail is collected from 5.7 lakh letter boxes ,processed by a network of mail offices, and conveyed by rail,road, or airlines to every nook and corner of the country
